On April 10, when the unions called the first faculty strike in Rutgers’ 277-year history, Gov. Phil Murphy called both sides to Trenton to negotiate with the help of two mediators and some of his top staff members. On April 15, he announced a tentative framework had been reached. Strikers returned to the classroom the following Monday.
The intervening two weeks of bargaining focused mainly on the medical faculty union, the American Association of University Professors–Biomedical and Health Sciences of New Jersey, representing 1,300 health science faculty. The preliminary framework included for part-time lecturers — also known as adjuncts — some job security and 44% raises over four years based on a current per-class salary of $5799a 27.
