SINGAPORE – When volunteer manager Vanessa Denise Foo, 35, was offered the chance to pick up basic life-saving skills through her employer SG Cares Volunteer Centre @ Yishun, she thought it would be a nice-to-have.
Launched in 2018, the free programme organised by the Singapore Heart Foundation teaches people quick and simple skills that are critical during a cardiac emergency. The dean and group director of Singapore Red Cross Academy, Mr Sahari Ani, said his 15-year career with the Red Cross has taught him that how quickly a country bounces back when a major disaster strikes depends on its civil defence – how many of its people are prepared for such emergencies.
“If we don’t have a strong foundation during peacetime, it will test our system, it will be fractured,” said the 60-year-old. “Just last week, an auntie fell down in front of me and started bleeding,” she said. After administering basic first aid, Ms Foo was able to call for help.
