who also joined us for part of the interview—follows Egypt-born Cohen, who was working as a clerk in Israel when he was recruited by the Mossad to become a spy in Syria. Leaving behind his wife, Nadia, he spent years inside the persona of his Arab alter ego, eventually befriending the men who would take over Syria and ascending to power himself. His story would be impossible to believe if it weren’t true.

It was kind of a superhero story—a deputy accountant in a supermarket who ends up becoming the most successful spy in the 20th century. This is somebody that I could relate to: He has genuine emotions, and loves his wife, and misses his children, and is living this dual life. And I related to him in my own way, in that when I go undercover on my shows, I have to convince people that I’m the real person, and I have this dual life.

This was the early days of human intelligence, where they would just send spies in and they’d literally read newspapers, listen to the radio, be the ears on the ground. Because Israel had no one in Syria. He ended up being far more successful and far more ambitious, partially due to a certain recklessness...
