In a wide-ranging interview about his outlook toward area sports, Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai said one of his first actions after his election was to meet with Spurs owner Peter J. Holt to discuss the franchise’s future in San Antonio.
Newly elected Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai speaks as people gather for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at Pittman-Sullivan Park in San Antonio on Monday, Jan. 16, 2023.A meeting with the Spurs managing partner marked one of Peter Sakai’s first acts after his election as Bexar County’s new leader.
Sakai, who is the first new leader of Bexar County Commissioners Court since Wolff won the seat in 2000, said he received assurances from Holt that the Spurs “are not going anywhere.”The Spurs play at the county-owned AT&T Center and their non-relocation agreement with the county runs through the 2031-32 season. The pact includes severe penalties should the Spurs break it.
“I will continue to monitor the situation, but I take Peter John and Corinna at their word,” Sakai said. “I truly believe their word is good and honorable, and that when they say they are staying, they are staying.” “You should do a deal with the devil if he will bring bucks to the community,” Wolff told the Express-News last summer. “That’s what I did when I cut one with Don King to come here with the Chávez fight , which was a big deal. We had at the Alamodome.
“One of pieces of advice was to always keep things at arm length and to do your due diligence and to make wise investment of taxpayer money,” Sakai said. “I did not commit to building a baseball stadium with taxpayer money. ... Professional sports teams must prove their worth and their return of investment for me to consider any use of taxpayer money.
