NEW FRANKLIN, Ohio – A New Franklin native is on course to make his community a place more people can enjoy after his purchase of a historic golf courseTim Adkins, a Portage Lakes businessman, recently paid $8.5 million for theThe course was under threat of becoming a 450- to 500-house development by a national developer after the family decided to sell the property that has been in the family since well before it was a golf course more than 100 years ago.
“I always wanted to live on the water, and if I’m able to get it zoned mixed-use, I could put a little coffee shop on the water,” he said. “And anybody who lives in the area could come down and sit by the water watching the boats go by while drinking a cup of coffee or eating a deli sandwich. But I just think it gives other people in the community the opportunity to be by the water.”
Something else Adkins wants to add is a working water and sewer system, which would cost about $9.5 million to implement. He noted that this would not only make the development functional, but it would also allow people in the area that have had to live with failed water and septic systems to have access to this new system as well.
In the meantime, Adkins said he does not anticipate any construction to begin until at least one year out. He added that he has been shopping around for design proposals and working with local officials to continue to focus on what is best for the community., an extensive course-rating website that notes: “Despite a rather ignoble name, this course is a wonderful test of golf. There are some truly beautiful holes with great elevation changes. Plays longer than you think.
