Salem takes the field against Paulsboro in Salem, NJ on Saturday, November 12, 2022.The football game between Salem County rivals Salem and Penns Grove will be played in front of a limited fan base due to a incidents in the community recently.

The teams are bitter rivals, but Salem athletic director Daryl Roberts and Penns Grove football coach John Emel said the decision had nothing to do with strife between the communities. Walnut Street field is down the street from the high school. The new stadium behind the school is expected to be ready to host Paulsboro on Oct. 7.

“We don’t have any knowledge of what it relates to, I just know it’s a non-school issue going on down in Salem,” said Emel. “It’s an important game for both programs. It’s a game between rival schools that have been in the playoffs. I wanted to make sure we didn’t the game. I talked to my AD last Thursday and asked if we might have to host and he said Salem was absolutely hosting. I was ready to do whatever .
