SambaNova Systems, a stealthy startup in the hot artificial intelligence hardware space, has raised a massive $150 million Series B investment from Intel and Alphabet
focusing on the space, but having both Intel and GV invest in this latest funding round presents an interesting joining of two major players, which have specialties in hardware and AI respectively. That match-up reflects SambaNova’s novel approach.
“We’re thinking about this from the top down,” Liang says. “And asking ‘How do you design a radically new systems architecture to deploy AI at scale?’”, and in that time the team has doubled from 50 people to more than 100.
“We’re seeing an opportunity to provide increased performance above and beyond the GPUs that are out there,” he says. Intel Capital's chief operating officer, Nick Washburn, said that the firm was likewise impressed by the software-defined approach, which he said would make SambaNova’s system “flexible, efficient, and scalable” as AI technology continues to evolve.
