James Madison High School graduate Todd Pletcher started Saturday morning with three horses in the 149th Kentucky Derby, but then Forte, the early favorite, scratched.
Kentucky Derby favorite Forte, with exercise rider Irad Ortiz Jr. up, and Pony rider Mary Ellet return to the barn after a morning workout Wednesday. Forte was scratched from the Derby on Saturday.As for the horse being scratched from Saturday’s race, he said the vets from the racing commission “acknowledged that he had made improvement this week, but they just didn’t feel like he was 100 percent,” Pletcher said to NBC. “It’s a tough call.
Seven horses have died in the run-up to this year’s Derby, including two horses who raced earlier Saturday. Chloe’s Dream, a 3-year-old gelding, and Freezing Point, a 3-year-old colt, were euthanized after being injured in their races.Another Derby contender, Lord Miles, was scratched after trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. was indefinitely suspended by the track.
