Two new books describe the development of local programs that gave Jefferson High School girls and Trinity University women a path to team sports.
Female athletes often were relegated to inferior, off-campus facilities. At softball practice on Lambert Beach in Brackenridge Park, for instance, a player remembered that “a ball hit past the right fielder was an automatic home run, since it typically rolled into the San Antonio River.”Until the late 1970s, women’s teams even had a separate but unequal name — “Tigerettes,” a diminutive of the school’s tiger mascot.
“The world turned upside down” after its passing, said Shirley Rushing, who taught women’s physical education at Trinity and supervised its women’s intramural program, as well as organizing the school’s first intercollegiate women’s tennis team. She was at the school from 1960-1995.
