A San Antonio woman pleaded guilty in federal court last week to providing the fentanyl that killed a man.

Claudia Cardenas, 47, was charged with distribution of a controlled substance resulting in death. On May 8, 2022, Cardenas gave a man a sample of fentanyl to"try before committing to future purchases," according to the Department of Justice. When the man ingested the drugs the next day, he immediately collapsed and was unresponsive.
People on the scene administered two doses of Narcan — a brand of naloxone, an opioid-overdose antidote — before first responders arrived, but medical personnel declared the man dead. An autopsy revealed that he died from the toxic effects of fentanyl and methamphetamine. Cardenas was arrested by San Antonio police on May 11 on an unrelated drug possession charge after she crashed a stolen vehicle. The responding officers found 3 pounds of methamphetamine, 2 pounds of fentanyl, drug paraphernalia, two firearms and fictitious plates in the vehicle, according to a federal complaint.
