San Diego police seek volunteers for crisis intervention team [Breaking]

The San Diego Police Department needs volunteers to join a little-known team that offers emotional support to members of the public during traumatic events, officials said.

Linda Maskovich, director of operations, said the optimum number of volunteers is 100, but the program is down to about 60. She said several volunteers left during the pandemic for various reasons. At the height of the pandemic, volunteers were confined to phone conversations, and some volunteers “wanted more,” Maskovich said. Others moved out of state.Maskovich said the program is important, particularly because the Police Department also is short-handed.

“The officers have a job to do, so we take care of the people while they’re taking care of the job,” Maskovich said.
