Startup has begun a Phase 3 clinical trial for its daily eye drops that aim to help middle age people as they naturally lose the ability to see up close
Lenz Therapeutics, which is developing daily eye drops to improve near vision for middle-aged folks, has raised $83.5 million in venture capital funding.
Lenz has developed two compounds — known as LNZ 100 and LNZ 101 — to treat people with near-vision loss associated with aging. In December, the company started a Phase 3 clinical trial for its once-a-day drops for people ages 45 to 75, which is expected to take about a year to complete. The goal is to show that a significant percentage of people gain three lines of improvement in near vision on an eye chart without losing one line of distance vision.
Schimmelpennink, former head of San Diego drug discovery biotech Pfenex, which was acquired by Ligand Pharmaceuticals, said Lenz’s eye drops are aimed at providing improved near vision for 10 hours or more. “If it is a working day, you put a drop in,” he said. “If you want to go surfing, you skip. So, it is very much by choice.”
