Founded in 2012, the North County artisan bake shops are known for their gourmet twists on comfort food classics
One of San Diego’s most popular hidden-gem restaurants, Nutmeg Bakery & Café, won’t be a secret much longer.
To survive, Drew Hoffos said they converted the cafés into markets, where they sold off their flour, yeast and other baking supplies and marketed sandwich meat by the pound. Nutmeg Bakery & Café learned early last year that it had been anonymously recommended to the producers of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” After several exhaustive hourslong interviews to ensure that Nutmeg was worthy of the show’s attention, the production crew arrived for three days of filming in mid-September. Host Fieri arrived at the end of the shoot and spent time with the owners as they cooked and he taste-tested their food.
The reason Fieri and the “Diners” production team was interested in Nutmeg Bakery & Café is its chef’s unusual background and its artisan food. Hoffos trained as a fine-dining chef, working at Market Del Mar, The Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe and the former Café Chloe in East Village. When he and his wife and mother-in-law opened Nutmeg Bakery & Café 11 years ago, it was originally planned as a side business Hoffos could run while he pursued his fine-dining dreams.
