Michael Buono contracted the disease in mid-February and died on March 4. SDSU is investigating whether the infection occurred on campus.
A San Diego State University physiology professor died of Legionella pneumonia on March 4, and the school is continuing to investigate whether the deadly bacteria was present in the building where he worked, officials said Tuesday.
At the time, about a dozen classes were being taught in ENS, according to a campus email. Instructors were advised to cancel classes or move them online for what was initially expected to be a short period of time. The university said the sampling was looking for any presence or absence of the serotype 1 version of the Legionella bacteria.
In another statement Tuesday, SDSU mourned the loss of a longtime professor. “Close colleagues and friends, of which there are many within our campus community, say Dr. Buono was ‘great at seeing the big picture and appreciating life.’ He cared greatly about students and was recognized by many as ‘the best teacher I ever had.’
