Santa Clara County looks to make Cupertino quarry’s decision to end cement production legally binding

The quarry has racked up more than 2,100 violations and accrued millions of dollars in fines over the last decade.

In the wake of Lehigh Hanson’s announcement last year that it was ending cement production at its quarry west of Cupertino, Santa Clara County is looking to make the decision to permanently end the nearly-century-old cement kiln’s operations legally binding.

Supervisor Joe Simitian, whose district encompasses the 3,510-acre Lehigh, called it a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to finally wrestle this issue to the ground.” In response to the board of supervisors’ decision, Lehigh Hanson spokesperson Jeff Seig said in an email that “we reiterate our ongoing focus on the development of a long-term strategy for the property so that it can continue to provide value in the future.”
