Lawmakers mostly repeated talking points on the House floor as they argued for or against impeachment. But several hours into the debate, one House Republican held a moment of silence for an unexpected source — the results of the 2016 election.
"We have a mission, and a mandate, to be on the right side of history," roared the Georgia congressman, who was beaten and jailed for his advocacy during the Civil Rights movement. “There’s no whipping going on whatsoever,” Kind said, when asked if he was facing pressure from fellow Democrats. “This is a personal conscience choice. The speaker has left it up to every individual member.”
“We’re all very serious about it. The gravity of this historic day is hard to overstate,” Rep. Jennifer Wexton said after taking a procedural vote to advance articles to the floor. Sen. Mazie Hirono , a sharp Trump critic and another former House member, also crossed the Capitol to hang out in the House chamber during part of the impeachment debate.
