White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump hasn't decided on a potential pardon for former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and he'll make that call when he's ready
President Donald Trump hasn't yet decided on a potential pardon for former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and he'll make that call when he's ready, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday.
Speculation about a presidential pardon grew after Manafort was convicted of a litany of crimes in federal court in Virginia and D.C. Trump told reporters Friday that he felt "very badly" for his embattled former aide, saying he's gone through a "very tough time."But Trump also said at the time that he has not discussed a pardon. Speaking to reporters during a rare press briefing Monday, Sanders reiterated that nothing has been ruled out.
"The president has made his position on that clear," Sanders said. "He'll make a decision when he's ready." The ambiguity hasn't stopped state prosecutors in New York from preparing charges against Manafort in case he does receive a pardon, Bloomberglast month. Because those charges would be handled in a state court, they would be immune from presidential intervention. New York County District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. is preparing a series of tax-related charges, Bloomberg reported, finding a way around laws that protect against double jeopardy.
