Richards was appointed to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal in 2004 and appointed as chief justice in 2013.
Before becoming a judge, Richards was a law clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada, served as director of constitutional law in the Saskatchewan Department of Justice, and was a partner in the law firm now known as MLT Aikins.
Richards is a long-time lecturer at the College of Law, University of Saskatchewan, and a frequent presenter at lawyers’ educational programs. He is also the chairperson of the Provincial Judicial Council and the first vice-chair of the Canadian Judicial Council. , to get books into the hands of inmates in the province’s jails, with the assistance of several other lawyers and judges.
