The review and appeal period for the 2023 assessment roll closes on Feb. 3. The roll is a list of every property assessment in Saskatoon; owners can either check their assessment online via the city’s website, or in person at the city’s assessment and valuation office, which is located at 325 Third Ave. N. and open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, excluding statutory holidays. The deadline for the public to inspect the 2023 assessment roll also ends Feb. 3.
The reminder for this year comes amid ongoing controversy over assessments that went out in 2021, based on pre-pandemic property valuations from 2019.that summer, as some saw their taxes as much as doubled in one fell swoop. One disgruntled property owner told Postmedia an analysis of 37 owner-operator businesses in the neighbourhood found their taxes went up by an average of 58 per cent. Many of those business owners found that they’d missed the deadline to appeal their assessments.
While reassessments that went out in 2022 saw many businesses’ taxes fall back to more normal values, city officials have said there’s no plan to refund or forgive 2021 tax bills, noting the provincial legislation governing Saskatoon’s assessment program restricts appeals to a 60-day window — with no provision for adjustments outside that time frame.Article content, which has been supported by the Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce.
