Colombians are on edge as authorities search for four Indigenous children who were on a small plane that crashed in the the Amazon jungle this month but have not been found.

In this photo released by Colombia's Armed Forces Press Office, a soldier stands in front of the wreckage of a Cessna C206, Thursday, May 18, 2023, that crashed in the jungle of Solano in the Caqueta state of Colombia. A search continues for four Indigenous children who may have survived the deadly plane crash in the Amazon jungle on May 1. On Tuesday, May 16, soldiers found the wreckage and the bodies of three adults, including the pilot and the children's mother.

Colombian troops found the wreckage Tuesday along with the bodies of the pilot, a guide and the children's mother. But there was no sign of the youngsters. On Wednesday, there appeared to be a breakthrough when Colombian President Gustavo Petro took to Twitter to announce that the four children had been found alive. But any elation was deflated hours later when Petro deleted the tweet, acknowledging that the children had in fact not been found.

Dozens of military personnel, supported by Indigenous people from nearby communities, have been searching the area where the plane crashed.
