A security supervisor at a foreign workers' dormitory in Singapore was sentenced to four weeks in jail for accepting a $29 bribe from a resident caught with a contraband cigarette.

A security supervisor at a foreign workers' dormitory in Singapore was sentenced to four weeks in jail for accepting a $29 bribe. Tanayogaraj Nagaraji, a 40-year-old Malaysian, was caught after a cleaner witnessed him taking the bribe from a Bangladeshi resident, Mr. Hasan Kamrul, in exchange for not reporting the possession of a contraband cigarette. On November 22, 2024, during a dormitory raid, Mr. Hasan was discovered with a cigarette stick in his bag.

Instead of following protocol, Tanayogaraj demanded $30 from Mr. Hasan and confiscated his work pass. Tanayogaraj later used some of the money to buy an energy drink before police officers seized the remaining $27 from him. The prosecution stated that Tanayogaraj was supposed to photograph the work permit and contraband cigarette, confiscate the cigarette, and report the incident to his management. Instead, he took a bribe and unlawfully possessed Mr. Hasan's work pass. Tanayogaraj had pleaded guilty to one count each of graft and unlawfully being in possession of Mr. Hasan's work pass. He was sentenced on January 14, 2025, and ordered to pay a $2 penalty. \ The incident came to light when an alert cleaner witnessed Mr. Hasan borrowing cash from a friend and saw Tanayogaraj and Mr. Hasan in a secluded corner behind a car. Mr. Hasan revealed the bribe exchange to the cleaner, who reported it to his supervisor. Two members of Tanayogaraj's management confronted him at the guardhouse, where he initially denied taking the money. However, police officers discovered the $27 hidden under a computer mat at Tanayogaraj's workstation. \This case highlights the importance of integrity within security personnel and the consequences of engaging in corrupt practices. It also emphasizes the role of vigilant cleaners and bystanders in deterring and reporting such illegal activities
