But to the 26-year-old, being open about mental health is especially important. “To hear it come out was really refreshing and almost felt like a sigh of relief, because there are times when I think I need to hide my diagnosis. I think her platform is one that's so powerful to have on my side, and advocating for me.”
Jillian*, a 27-year-old Selena fan from London, feels similarly. “It’s incredibly empowering to learn that someone I look up to also experiences [bipolar disorder] and feels the things I do,” she says, explaining that she was diagnosed with both bipolar andPart of the reason why Selena’s honesty is such a big deal is that there is still such a pervasive stigma attached to mental illness, along with so many misconceptions.
Those with bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses understand the hurtful effect of stigma all too well. “A lot of people still use [bipolar] as an everyday adjective and that's really harmful,” Olivia, a 20-year-old from Boston explains to, adding that she received inpatient treatment after her own bipolar diagnosis in 2016. “One thing we work on when planning for discharge is a ‘lie’ you can tell when you get back to school or work about where you were,” she says.
It’s always incredibly impactful when someone with a big platform like Selena opens up about something that many other people experience, but sometimes in silence. At the end of the day, it helps people feel seen — and that’s immeasurably valuable. As Olivia puts it: “Even though I don't know Selena personally, it was really a comforting feeling to learn that she deals with bipolar disorder as well. Hearing that we have walked similar paths, it feels like we have a connection.
