Russian state media reported that WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich was formally charged with espionage, as Senate leaders called for his release. Gershkovich pleaded not guilty, according to a state media.
Russia’s Federal Security Service, or FSB, “charged Gershkovich with espionage in the interests of his country,” the news agency said, citing an official from the law-enforcement agency. Mr. Gershkovich “categorically denied all accusations and stated that he was engaged in journalistic activities in Russia,” the news agency said.
A State Department spokeswoman declined to comment on the report of formal charges.
