SINGAPORE: A former police officer has backed fellow officer Uvaraja s/o Gopal’s claims that he suffered abuse of authority and racism by his colleagues and superiors in a post published a day after Sergeant Uvaraja was found dead at the foot of an HDB block in Yishun.Mr Raj said that Sgt Uvaraja was a dedicated and principled officer who overcame many hardships to achieve his dream of becoming an officer and giving his family a better life.
Mr Raj’s account of Sgt Uvaraja’s experiences in the police force was nothing short of troubling. The former officer highlighted an incident from 2015 when Sgt Uvaraja reported a racial slur directed at him by his Team Leader. The subsequent response from his superiors only added to Sgt Uvaraja’s distress. “In December 2015, Raja’s CO recalled him back to the office whilst he was on medical leave and questioned the validity of his medical conditions, used vulgarities against him and shouted at him to resign,” Raj Naga disclosed.
Mr Raj added that his friend left him a four-minute-long voice message moments before he died and blamed himself for not attending to Sgt Uvaraja’s final distress call as he was outside. He lamented: Vouching that Sgt Uvaraja was an exemplary officer who held himself to high standards, Mr Raj said: “Sgt T120387 Uvaraja s/o Gopal was a highly disciplined police officer who was deeply passionate about policing and fighting crime.
Mr Raj, who has known Sgt Uvaraja since the latter was serving his National Service, added: “He conducted his own physical training to obtain a gold IPPT standard just so his application would stand out. In 2012, he fulfilled his dream and was posted to Ang Mo Kio Police Division.”“In Dec 2015, on his own accord, he approached me seeking help with some issues he was facing at work, and I officially took on his case after referring the matter to my Chief Paracounsellor.
