The Tenderloin was also the city’s first neighborhood to have some speed limit reductions, Preston said. Severe car crashes are 10 times more likely in the neighborhood than the rest of San Francisco, according to San Francisco Police Department data reported by theAccording to a 2022 update from the SFMTA evaluating the Tenderloin restrictions, 92% of drivers complied with the no-turn ban, resulting in a 70% decrease in vehicles blocking crosswalks.
Turning on red accounts for less than 1% of all San Francisco crashes involving any injuries, the report states. But it accounts for 20% of crashes where a driver turned at a signal and injured a pedestrian or cyclist. “We are really trying to learn from the Tenderloin pilot around turn on red, but what we haven't seen is a citywide plan for really scaling up and implementing no turn on red in other parts of the city,” Preston said.
The SFMTA is still evaluating Preston’s resolution, Stephen Chun, a spokesperson for the department, told SFGATE.Preston said his office has been in communication with the SFMTA for an extended period of time about a right-turn ban. “We’ve had fatalities so far this year, including one recently that involved a right turn, and so I think there's been increased attention on this issue,” he said. “But also this is not like we [haven’t] been in communication with the SFMTA for quite some time about these various tools, and working with them.”
