“It’ll just be a question of whether there’s mutual interest,” Zaidi said of the Giants’ potential free agent pursuits.
Farhan Zaidi made it clear to Giants fans and free agents everywhere on Wednesday: the Giants are ready to spend this offseason.
The Giants figure to be one of the busiest teams in the majors this winter, coming off a disappointing 81-81 season and having significant payroll flexibility. During a session with reporters at the GM Meetings in Las Vegas on Wednesday, the Giants’ president of baseball operations announced no free agent would be too costly for the team to consider.
“I don’t think from a financial standpoint, there’s nobody that would be out of our sort of capability to kind of be what we expect the contract demands would be,” Zaidi told reporters, “and then it’ll just be a question of whether there’s mutual interest.” Tops on the Giants’ list, of course, would be Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, the Linden native who just set the AL single-season home run record. Judge is 30, will receive a qualifying offer from the Yankees before Thursday’s deadline and he could command a deal worth $300 million or more.
The Giants will make a run at re-signing left-hander Carlos Rodón, and have been linked to high-profile shortstops Trea Turner, Carlos Correa, Xander Bogaerts and Dansby Swanson. Zaidi told reporters that he considers Brandon Crawford the Giants’ starting shortstop and he’s met with representatives for shortstops who would be willing to playing other positions.
