The centennial celebrate the aquarium’s most famous residents and highlight the aquarium's lesser-known history.
When Steinhart Aquarium opened its doors in September 1923 to a crowd of around 5,000, aquariums weren’t a common attraction.
The centennial will not only celebrate the aquarium’s most famous residents — including Methuselah, the oldest documented aquarium fish, and Claude — but also highlight the aquarium’s lesser-known history, from its syndicated television show to its patented air-pressure chamber. “They’re super charismatic,” he said. “We do two-times-a-day public feedings where we can talk about the plight that African penguins are facing in the wild and ways that people can contribute.”
Even before Shepherd’s tenure as executive director, the aquarium and its staff were trailblazers for scientific innovation, he said. A previous director, Dr. Alvin Seale, pioneered using dried brine shrimp, tiny crustaceans concentrated in the salt flats near Hayward, as seafood. Dubbed “the Twilight Zone,” aquarium staff created a decompression chamber that can bring fish up from deep depths to the surface without harming the fish allowing scientists to discover new species.
