The current Woodbury Intermediate School, now proposed as an expanded middle school, actually opened in 1918 as Shaker Heights Junior and Senior High School. It was the second public school to be built in the city, Boulevard being the first.SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Shaker school board officials and local opposition continue to make their respective cases for and against Issue 13, the proposed 9.95-mill property tax request coming before voters Nov. 7.
“This is a generational expense that deserves detailed planning with measurable educational outcomes,” Sheehan said. What “Segment One” proposes would be the conversion of Woodbury Intermediate School, currently housing all of the district’s fifth- and sixth-graders, into a new middle school for grades 6, 7 and 8. A competition swimming pool is also included in the plans.
Sheehan said the plan does not address “long-term race-based inequities of our elementary school attendance zones and the resulting busing of Moreland students.” Responding to an audience question about a reported $66 million cash balance in the district’s budget, Cover said this should provide “a good example of strong fiscal management,” although some of that came in the form of federal COVID-19 relief and recovery funds.
