Time for another bout of Bieber Fever.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Shane Bieber can almost smell the hot dogs grilling in the ballpark as he stands atop the mound at Kauffman Stadium.As Beiber and the Guardians completed preparations Wednesday in Kansas City for his third straight season-opening start, the 26-year-old righty said he feels healthy and ready to get the season underway.
After a “different type of offseason,” Bieber admitted players in the clubhouse weren’t sure when or if opening day would arrive. But he hopes that each of his teammates feels some sort of appreciation for the opportunity that they’re given to be able to represent themselves, their team and the league.
Bieber said he does not have a specific target pitch count for Thursday’s opener, but he anticipates getting together during the game with manager Terry Francona and pitching coach Carl Willis to make an “informed decision” on how deep he goes. If a Bob Feller-esque opening day no-hitter is off the table, then Bieber said he might shoot for a “Maddux,” the term coined by baseball blogger Jason Lukeheart that describes a complete game shutout on fewer than 100 pitches.Bieber will join a list of 12 Cleveland pitchers to start three consecutive opening day games when he toes the rubber at Kauffman Stadium on Thursday.
