Shark Week 2019 aims to dispel the fear associated with sharks and to teach people why they are so important to the oceans—and planet overall
“Sharks have no interest in humans, so when there are encounters it’s often a case of mistaken identity,” Romeiro says. “Poor visibility can be a factor, especially at dusk and dawn when there’s low light. They cannot see well in murky water and usually, they see just a silhouette. Sometimes it’s a competition factor; one animal wants to get to something perceived as prey before another animal. Sharks don’t have vendettas.
California ranked in the top five for shark attacks in the country with 79 since 2000, with fatal attacks in both decades. Florida and Hawaii hold the top spots for most shark attacks out of coastal states. Florida had 486, while Hawaii had 117. Since 2000, 25% of victims were female and 75% male.
