The FBI has identified a 20-year-old Pennsylvania man as the suspected shooter, a CNN reporter posted on X citing sources. The shooter’s motive was not immediately clear but authorities recovered an AR-15-type semi-automatic rifle at the scene from a deceased man they believe was the shooter, according to two law enforcement officials.
The Secret Service and the former president’s campaign said Trump was safe following the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, about 50km north of Pittsburgh.The Secret Service released a statement on X saying: “During former President Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on the evening of July 13th at approximately 6.15pm, a suspected shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue.
Republican Senate candidate David McCormick, who was seated in the front row at the rally, said he had started to go up on stage when Trump said he would have him come up later. The former president ducked quickly after the noises began, with the sound coming from the bleachers to the left of where he was standing at a lectern. The noises came in two groups, and smoke rose from that section of the bleachers.
After he departed, a group of officials wearing camouflage escorted someone off a set of bleachers to the left of the podium where Trump was speaking. Police officials began cordoning off the area with crime-scene tape as the rally’s attendees began clearing out, and blood was visible on the bleachers.
