Singapore saw a 7.6% increase in shoplifting cases between 2023 and 2024. The FairPrice Xtra outlet at Jurong Point was the hardest hit. Authorities attribute the rise to improved CCTV technology, while efforts to combat youth shoplifting include school talks and community engagement programs.
Singapore experienced a 7.6% rise in shop theft cases between 2023 and 2024, reaching a total of 4,239 incidents. This marked a significant increase from the 3,939 cases reported in 2023, representing 21.2% of all physical crime cases last year. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) attributes this rise partly to the wider adoption of CCTV technology by retailers, which has enabled them to detect more shoplifting incidents.
The FairPrice Xtra outlet at Jurong Point was the most affected by shop theft, followed by Watsons at Suntec City Mall and Cold Storage at Plaza Singapura. The SPF noted that shoplifting is also one of the most common offenses among youths apprehended in 2024. Stolen goods often include personal care products, food and beverages, and cosmetics. These crimes typically occur in supermarkets, beauty shops, and health and wellness stores.To combat this trend, the SPF is actively collaborating with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to raise awareness among youths about the consequences of shoplifting. School talks are conducted at all MOE schools annually, while the 'Coffee with a Cop' initiative provides opportunities for public interaction with officers. Additionally, the SPF encourages retailers to participate in the Shop Theft Awareness for Retailers (STAR) program, which helps identify vulnerabilities and improve crime prevention measures. The SPF emphasizes the need for a community-wide effort to curb shoplifting, urging vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activities
