If Gov. Spencer Cox gets his way, riding on Utah’s public transit system would be free.

“We think with this one-year pilot program, that will allow us to really see what’s happening,” Cox said during a news conference Friday, “this is a win-win — we have the money to fund it ... But this is good for clean air, it’s good to get cars off of our congested roadways and we think it will make a big difference long term.”
Cox said Friday the free fares could start next summer or fall. The proposal would be part of the 2024 fiscal year, which will run from July 1, 2023, through the following June.in the state, citing it as a way for Utahns to combat high gas prices. However, House Majority Leader Mike Schultz, R-Hooper, later told The Salt Lake Tribune there wasn’t much support for free or reduced fares for transit.in a bill during the 2022 legislative session, but the bill didn’t pass.
