When driving to the Hoover Dam from Las Vegas, you do not receive any glimpse of what the American Society of Civil Engineers calls one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

BOULDER CITY, Nevada - What if there was a 726-foot-tall structure sitting on the edge of Lake Erie, taller than many Cleveland skyscrapers, capable of blocking out the sun from boaters and kayakers below?

Only upon the final bend does the cliff stretch out into view, a permanent wedge between mountains, with power plants at its base and power wires crossing the airspace above. It’s only about a 50- to 60-minute car ride to the Hoover Dam from Las Vegas. It takes more than half of that time to travel round-trip from the Las Vegas Strip to Downtown Las Vegas, where popular museums like the Mob Museum are located.

The town was needed because the people who built the dam worked 363 days of the year, getting only the Fourth of July and Christmas off. Initially designed to house 5,000 workers, Boulder City has a current population of 14,885, according to the U.S. Census. While not as big as Lake Erie, Lake Mead is the largest man-made lake or reservoir in the country in terms of water capacity when the lake is full. At maximum capacity, it is 112 miles long and deeper than 500 feet at its greatest depth, or enough to cover the state of Pennsylvania with a foot of water, according to the Bureau of Reclamation.

On the left is the Lake Mead satellite photo from 2000. On the right is Lake Mead in 2022, with visibly reduced water levels.None of this changes the fact that once I got back into the car and drove the remaining 10 minutes to my final destination, the Hoover Dam stretched from behind a wall of rock like the modern marvel it once was and, frankly, still is.If you take the tour through the dam, you will meet at the visitor center at the very top of the structure.

I only learned of this later on in the trip, at the Mob Museum in downtown Las Vegas. The Hoover Dam was included in the museum because, like the mob, it is part of what makes Las Vegas the destination it is today.
