A 40-year-old Chinese national was arrested for storing and delivering 1,188 bottles of duty-unpaid liquor after a tip-off led customs officers to a self-storage facility in Kaki Bukit Crescent. Singapore Customs apprehended a 40-year-old male Chinese national on June 22 for involvement with duty-unpaid liquor. Acting on a tip-off, officers conducted an operation near Kaki Bukit Crescent, where they observed the suspect unloading brown boxes from a Singapore-registered lorry onto a trolley and moving them into a storage room at a self-storage facility.
A search revealed 792 bottles of duty-unpaid liquor in the storage room and an additional 396 bottles in the lorry, bringing the total seized to 1,188 bottles. The total duty and Goods and Services Tax evaded by this operation is estimated at $75,835. According to authorities, the man had allegedly secured the job of storing and delivering the duty-unpaid liquor through a social messaging platform, highlighting the use of digital channels in illicit trade.
Under Singapore's Customs Act and GST Act, any dealing in duty-unpaid liquor-including buying, selling, conveying, delivering, storing, keeping, possessing-is a serious offense. Penalties for such offenses can include a fine of up to 20 times the amount of duty and GST evaded and/or imprisonment for up to two years. Singapore Customs emphasizes that information on smuggling activities, duty evasion, or GST evasion can be reported through official channels to support enforcement efforts.
This case underscores the ongoing vigilance of customs authorities against black-market operations, particularly in high-tax goods like alcohol, and serves as a warning to those engaging in similar illicit activities
