SINGAPORE - Sentiment among Singapore manufacturers saw a marginal improvement in August but remained in negative territory for the fourth consecutive month as the escalating US-China trade war continued to cast a shadow on the sector.

The slight uptick in August was due to the marginal expansion posted in new orders, factory output, as well as a slower contraction in inventory, the Singapore Institute of Purchasing and Materials Management said in its report on Tuesday . The increase in new orders could be a result of manufacturers front-loading their orders in anticipation of US-China tariff hikes which are slated to take effect on Dec 15, Dr Chua noted, adding that the consumer electronics sector is set to be hit hardest by these tariffs.

The small improvement was caused by slower contraction of new orders, inventory and employment level.
