The Singaporean Government has pledged to provide additional support to its citizens as the global energy crisis continues to escalate, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced on Friday, May 1, during the May Day Rally at Downtown East.
Addressing a crowd of 1,600 union leaders and tripartite partners, PM Wong emphasized that if the situation worsens, the Government will take decisive action to assist Singaporeans. He stated, 'In times like this, Singaporeans can count on one thing: Your Government will act. We will do so decisively, and we will stand with you every step of the way.
' The Prime Minister highlighted that Singapore had recently navigated the challenges posed by US tariffs, but now faces a more severe crisis as the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route, has been effectively closed for over two months due to the conflict between the US/Israel and Iran. He cautioned that it will take at least several months for the shipping situation to stabilize, warning that the crisis is far from over and pressures are likely to intensify.
Fuel and energy supply disruptions may worsen in the coming months, leading to rising inflation, which will place significant strain on businesses, workers, and households. Despite these challenges, PM Wong expressed confidence in Singapore's ability to weather the storm, citing the country's strong reserves, energy resilience, and well-developed refining and petrochemical industries. He noted that Singapore has become a key hub in global energy flows, thanks to decades of deliberate choices and sustained efforts.
The world's leading energy companies operate in Singapore, refining, storing, and trading oil, and are connected to diverse supply networks, allowing them to adapt when one source is disrupted. The Prime Minister also announced that the Government is stepping up its support for Singaporeans, including an almost $1 billion package to mitigate the impact of the crisis.
This package includes an increased cost-of-living special payment by $200, the early disbursement of $500 CDC vouchers from January 2027 to June 2026, a $200 cash disbursement for active platform workers, private hire car drivers, and taxi drivers, and enhanced corporate income tax rebates. PM Wong urged businesses to contribute by supporting their workers and easing the burden on Singaporeans.
Additionally, he addressed the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the workforce, emphasizing that AI will not only improve productivity but also disrupt entire industries. He acknowledged the anxiety surrounding AI, with many questioning its potential to replace jobs and create uncertainty for future generations.
However, he assured Singaporeans that as the economy transforms, new and better jobs will be created, and the Government will protect every worker. He encouraged Singaporeans to embrace AI, stating that those who learn and master AI will have better opportunities and prospects. Companies that adopt AI will remain competitive, and workers who develop AI skills will thrive in the evolving job market
