Singapore Must Adapt Policies for New Global Order, Says MP Jamus Lim
SingaporeGlobalizationEconomic Policy

In a parliamentary address, MP Jamus Lim urged Singapore to adjust its economic strategies in light of a changing global environment. He recommended a pivot toward tradable services, stronger focus on Asian and ASEAN markets, and an incremental approach to major infrastructure projects to mitigate risks from potential globalization slowdown.

Singapore has long leveraged globalization to fuel its economic ascent, becoming a global trade and finance hub. However, according to Member of Parliament Jamus Lim, speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, July 7, the nation must now recalibrate its strategies in response to a shifting geopolitical and economic landscape.

The core of his argument is that the era of unfettered globalization may be waning, requiring Singapore to adopt more cautious and regionally focused policies to sustain prosperity. Lim emphasized a strategic pivot from traditional merchandise trade toward the expansion of tradable services, recognizing the growing importance of sectors like finance, consulting, and digital solutions in the contemporary world economy.

He also stressed the need for Singapore to deepen its economic ties with its 'near abroad'-specifically Asia and ASEAN-rather than relying solely on distant markets. This involves fostering stronger regional integration, attracting businesses through its role as an international financial centre, and creating opportunities for skilled local talent to gain exposure within the region.

Furthermore, Lim cautioned against large-scale, monolithic infrastructure projects, advocating instead for an incrementalist approach. The risk of committing to mega-projects is that they could become underutilized or financially burdensome if globalization proceeds in a more restrained or fragmented manner. By building infrastructure in phases, Singapore can remain agile and responsive to evolving global conditions, ensuring that investments are justified by actual demand.

This broader policy shift reflects a pragmatic adaptation to a world where protectionism, regional blocs, and digital transformations are reshaping international commerce. Singapore's success will hinge on its ability to balance global connectivity with regional rootedness, and to pursue growth with greater flexibility and foresight
