Singapore has provisionally selected 256 athletes across 23 sports for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, led by defending champions Shanti Pereira and Ryan Lo. Notable selections include badminton star Loh Kean Yew and swimmers from the Quah family, while football is excluded and sprinter Marc Brian Louis is omitted due to disciplinary reasons.
Singapore has provisionally selected a total of 256 athletes across 23 sports to represent the country at the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) announced the first batch of athletes and teams on Tuesday, June 2, for the games scheduled from September 19 to October 4, 2026.
The contingent includes defending Asian Games champions Shanti Pereira (athletics) and Ryan Lo (sailing), along with other notable names such as badminton player Loh Kean Yew and swimmers from the Quah family. Of the athletes selected, 115 had met the qualification criteria set by the Asian Games organizers, while 141 were exempted from qualification but still satisfied the benchmarks established by the SNOC Selection Committee.
Shanti Pereira, who won the 200m gold at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, will defend her title in Japan. Ryan Lo, a gold medalist in sailing from the previous edition, will also aim to retain his crown.
However, not all top athletes made the cut. The SNOC confirmed that the football team will not be represented due to a qualification criteria implemented by organizers that was validated by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the Olympic Council of Asia.
Additionally, sprinter Marc Brian Louis was notably omitted from the athletics team. The SNOC Appeals Committee reviewed Singapore Athletics nomination for Louis but decided against his selection, citing failure to honor commitments to the SNOC, particularly after his participation at the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games, as well as disparaging remarks made publicly.
The SNOC described the 20th edition of the Asian Games as an opportunity for Team Singapore to compete against the best athletes on one of Asias premier sporting stages. Some athletes and teams remain under consideration as they work toward meeting the required benchmarks. National Sports Associations (NSAs) will make final selections for certain events from the pre-qualified athletes. NSAs that missed the deadline for initial selection can appeal later this month through the established process.
Athletes who missed out on provisional selection will have another chance by the end of the month. The final contingent for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Games will be confirmed closer to the event after the entry-by-name process is concluded. Singapore will aim to improve on its performance from the previous Asian Games, where it won 12 medals, including 3 golds
