Three Chinese nationals were arrested at Changi Airport after robbing a woman of $50,000 at Marina Bay Sands and attempting to flee to Shanghai. The victim was restrained by the neck and locked on a balcony with her child before police recalled their departing plane within four hours.
Singaporean police have arrested three Chinese nationals in connection with a brazen robbery at the Marina Bay Sands hotel that occurred on Monday, June 1, 2026.
The incident began when a 45-year-old female victim from China, accompanied by her child, met an individual she had connected with on a messaging platform who purported to offer foreign currency exchange services. The victim had agreed to exchange $50,000 Singapore dollars for foreign currency, with the funds to be deposited into her bank e-wallet. The meeting took place near the Marina Bay Sands hotel.
During the encounter, one of the suspects physically restrained the victim by her neck and forcibly demanded the cash. After obtaining the money, the three male suspects, aged between 29 and 34, fled the scene and locked the victim and her child on the balcony of a hotel room. The victim reportedly had to climb over to an adjacent balcony to seek help.
The suspects then proceeded directly to Changi Airport, boarding a flight bound for Shanghai before their crime was even discovered. However, Singapore police acted swiftly. They received the report at approximately 7:00 PM on Monday and within four hours, by 11:00 PM, had identified the three individuals and determined they had already boarded a departing flight.
The authorities successfully recalled the aircraft after it had left the boarding gate, leading to the immediate arrest of the trio upon the plane's return to the terminal. Flight tracking data indicates there were two Shanghai-bound flights departing Singapore after 11:00 PM that night-China Eastern Airlines MU566 and Juneyao Airlines HO1576. MU566, scheduled for 11:10 PM, was delayed by nearly an hour, which may have provided critical time for police coordination.
Under Singapore law, for crimes committed jointly, each participant is held liable as if they acted alone. If convicted, each suspect faces a severe penalty of five to twenty years imprisonment and a minimum of twelve strokes of the cane. A police statement emphasized that such brazen criminal acts will not be tolerated and offenders will be pursued relentlessly.
The public is advised to remain vigilant, especially when engaging in financial transactions arranged through social media or messaging apps with unknown parties. In similar situations, victims should try to stay calm, note the perpetrator's physical description and distinctive features, and contact police immediately
