A Singapore permanent resident, also a Malaysian national, received a five-week jail sentence after assaulting five church attendees at Singapore Life Church on Prinsep Street.
The 33-year-old offender, Wee Soon Ming, pleaded guilty to two counts of voluntarily causing hurt, with four other similar charges taken into consideration during sentencing. The incident occurred on May 3 when Wee became upset after being prevented from taking a free Bible from the church. As he left, he indiscriminately slapped worshippers. One victim, a 65-year-old woman, was slapped across the face, resulting in a bleeding nose injury requiring medical treatment and seven days of medical leave.
Her daughter-in-law was struck on the head. Another victim, a 55-year-old woman, was slapped on the back of her head and shoulder, suffering soreness. Both declined compensation. Court documents revealed Wee had visited the church previously and had taken free Bibles before.
On an earlier occasion, a pastor limited him to one or two copies, which he accepted. However, on the day of the attack, he reacted violently when stopped again. Police arrested him at his home the same day. Following arrest, Wee was remanded for mental assessment, which found a mild intellectual disability but no causal link to his actions.
He was deemed capable of understanding his conduct and its wrongfulness, and fit to plead. Prosecutors clarified there was no religious motivation. Under Singapore law, voluntarily causing hurt carries a maximum penalty of three years' imprisonment, a fine up to S$5,000, or both. The case underscores how fleeting anger can have lasting repercussions for all involved
