United States Latest News,United States Headlines

Singaporeans are living longer, with life expectancy at birth rising to 83.9 years in 2025, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, according to SingStat data. The increase reflects improvements in healthcare and survival rates across all ages.

Singapore residents can now expect to live longer than ever before. According to the latest data from the Singapore Department of Statistics (SingStat), life expectancy at birth for residents reached 83.9 years in 2025, an increase of 0.2 years from 2024.

This marks a steady improvement over the past decade, rising from 82.9 years in 2015 and surpassing the pre-pandemic peak of 83.7 years in 2019. The data highlights the sustained progress in public health and medical advancements that have contributed to increased longevity. The increase is consistent across both genders, with males seeing a life expectancy of 81.8 years and females reaching 86.0 years in 2025.

Over the last decade, male life expectancy improved by 1.3 years from 80.5 years, while female life expectancy improved by 0.9 years from 85.1 years. These gains reflect improvements in healthcare delivery, disease prevention, and healthier lifestyles among the population. Life expectancy at age 65 also rose, indicating that Singapore's elderly population is living longer and healthier lives.

Residents aged 65 in 2025 can expect to live to an average of 86.6 years, up 0.2 years from 2024 and 0.8 years from 2015. For males at age 65, life expectancy increased by 1 year from 2015 to 84.9 years, while females saw a rise of 0.8 years to 88.1 years.

Additionally, the survival rates for newborns have improved significantly. Among newborn boys, the proportion expected to reach age 65 increased from 89% in 2015 to 90.3% in 2025, and the proportion expected to reach age 85 rose from 42.3% to 47.6%. Newborn girls continue to have higher survival rates, with 94.4% expected to live to 65 (up from 93.6%) and 64.3% expected to live to 85 (up from 59%).

These numbers underscore the effectiveness of Singapore's healthcare system in reducing premature mortality and extending life expectancy across all age groups. The steady increase in life expectancy reflects broader trends in Singapore's demographic and health landscape. Factors contributing to this rise include improved medical treatments for chronic diseases, better management of infectious diseases, higher standards of living, and greater health awareness among the population. The city-state has invested heavily in healthcare infrastructure, public health campaigns, and age-friendly initiatives.

However, an aging population also presents challenges such as increased demand for healthcare services, eldercare, and pension systems. Policymakers are focusing on promoting healthy aging, encouraging active lifestyles, and ensuring sustainable healthcare financing. The SingStat data aligns with global trends where developed countries are seeing gradual increases in life expectancy. As Singapore continues to advance in medical research and technology, further improvements in life expectancy are expected, although the pace may slow as it approaches biological limits.

The data serves as a key indicator for planning social services and economic policies to support an increasingly older populace
