Singapore River Nightlife Cautiously Embraces Extended Liquor Sales Hours

A year-long trial to extend liquor sales hours in Singapore's Boat Quay, Upper Circular Road, and Clarke Quay has seen a mixed reception from nightlife establishments. While some establishments are reporting increased customer traffic and sales, others remain cautious due to uncertainty surrounding customer footfall and profit margins.

Singapore River One, an organization overseeing the area, said that the extended liquor hours trial started on August 18th in three areas: Boat Quay, Upper Circular Road, and Clarke Quay. There are over 200 establishments in these zones that are eligible to participate. As of August 18th, the police had approved six applications for extensions, with some businesses choosing to stay open until the 4am cutoff. Mr.

Loganathan Adiaya, the owner of Club Bagawan along Boat Quay, one of the approved establishments, reported a 70% occupancy rate in his adjoining bar, Star Bagawan, after 3am, demonstrating the potential impact of the extended hours. He believes that the extra hour could significantly benefit the area. “A lot of them are converting their licence from restaurant to bar,” Mr. Adiaya explained, “then after that, they go to the police for the liquor licence,” adding that the licensing process might be a reason for the slower uptake among businesses. Mr. Adiaya further highlighted that during the COVID-19 pandemic, many nightclubs shifted their status to restaurants to survive, which could be another factor affecting the number of businesses participating in the trial.Ms. Mitch Phang, the owner of SMLJ bar on Circular Road, decided to apply for the liquor sales extension as a precautionary measure, acknowledging the potential for a surge in customers after midnight. While she hasn’t yet adjusted her operating hours, she said, “if I extends her official closing time to 4am, customers will simply come in later.” She observed that during the Hungry Ghost Festival, many locals may visit bars and entertainment venues later in the night, and the extended hours could cater to this trend. However, Ms. Phang raised concerns about whether extended hours would necessarily translate to higher profits. Customer preferences and alcohol consumption patterns could influence the success of the trial. She noted that some customers might only order a single bucket of beer even if they stay longer, which wouldn't be significantly profitable for her bar. Similar sentiments were echoed by Mr. Anuj, the director of food and beverage and head of operations at Blu Jaz in Clarke Quay, who emphasized the importance of customer behaviour being reflected in sales for the extended hours to be justifiable
