K-pop has never been more in demand, with at least 16 gigs including Stray Kids still to come in 2024.

SINGAPORE – In the first six months of 2024 alone, Ms Elena Neo has attended 10 K-pop concerts and spent more than $2,500 on tickets.danced along to girl groups IVE in February and Itzy in April, as well as boy bands Shinee in March and NCT Dream in June. She sang to her heart’s content at gigs by South Korean singers Baekhyun and Kyuhyun in March, Moonbyul in April and Hwasa in June. In April, she flew to Seoul in South Korea to catch two shows by boy band Seventeen.

On July 14, second-generation boy band Super Junior will storm the Singapore Indoor Stadium, while South Korean acoustic-folk indie singer Kwon Jung-yeol – who performs under the moniker 10cm – will serenade audiences with K-drama tracks at Gateway Theatre. Some of the upcoming acts will be marking milestones. Gen-Z rapper and hip-hop star Lee Young-ji will bring her first world tour, All Or Nothing, to Capitol Theatre on Oct 19, after playing the same venue in October 2023. Soojin will hold her first solo performance in Singapore at the same venue on Aug 9.

The academic teaches a module that examines the idol phenomenon in Japan and South Korea. She notes that although entertainment agencies continue to exert a strong control over the public image of K-pop stars, recent years have seen more idols, such as BTS’ Jimin, speak openly about their insecurities and anxieties.

Ms Quek says: “These evolutions have helped K-pop transform into a multi-faceted global cultural force.” K-pop boy group Riize, comprising Eunseok, Shotaro, Wonbin, Anton, Sungchan and Sohee, will perform at the Singapore Expo Hall 7 on July 20. PHOTO: AFPRegarding the buffet of acts stopping by Singapore to perform, Mr Alan Chan says it is likely a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, when live performances could not be held. He is chief executive of Singapore-based entertainment company Southern IX, which grooms, trains and manages K-pop artistes.

As for whether Singapore’s K-pop concert scene is oversaturated, fans here say the K-pop bonanza is backed by local demand. For example, the upcoming gigs by Super Junior, Aespa, Highlight and Tomorrow X Together have sold out.
