SINGAPORE: Electronics are among the leading contributors to global plastic waste, with discarded e-waste posing significant environmental risks.

When improperly disposed of, the plastics in electronic devices can release toxic chemicals, which may linger in the environment.

A team of scientists from Nanyang Technological University , led by Associate Professor Lee Jong-Min from the School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Biotechnology, has developed a solution to make the recycling of e-waste plastics both safer and more efficient. The solvents effectively target and remove the BFRs without affecting the integrity of the plastic itself. As a result, the researchers were able to recover over 80% of the plastic, ensuring that its original properties remained unchanged.
