Singapore is set to construct a new 10,000-seater football stadium in Toa Payoh, becoming the second-largest in the country. The stadium's design allows for future expansion to meet increasing demand.
A new 10,000-seater football stadium is set to be built at the Toa Payoh Integrated Development by 2030, making it the second-largest football facility in Singapore after the National Stadium . While the initial capacity is 10,000, SportSG chief Alan Goh stated that the stadium's design allows for future expansion if demand necessitates it. He highlighted that government funding for such projects necessitates careful consideration and utilization.
Goh emphasized that data demonstrating consistent high demand, like witnessed during the Asean Championship semi-finals held at the Jalan Besar Stadium, would justify building a larger venue. The Toa Payoh Integrated Development project also includes a 2,000-seater aquatic centre with four indoor swimming pools, a 5,000-seat indoor hall, and sheltered futsal, tennis, and netball courts. The 10,000-seater football stadium's capacity has sparked discussions, with some suggesting a larger mid-tier stadium ranging from 20,000 to 25,000 seats to accommodate major events. Goh acknowledged the need for a larger venue but pointed out that such situations are infrequent. He stated that building a stadium for 10,000 seats allows for flexibility and future expansion when the need arises. The development of new sports facilities in land-scarce Singapore remains a crucial topic. Goh indicated that SportSG is actively exploring possibilities for a motorsports hub, although finding suitable land remains a challenge. Other developments under consideration include a velodrome at the Kallang Alive precinct and an Olympic-sized skating rink, as the existing one at JCube Mall has been closed. Goh emphasized SportSG's commitment to supporting athletes and making sports a viable career path through initiatives like the spexEducation Undergraduate Scholarship programme and monthly CPF top-ups for spexScholars. He highlighted the positive feedback from both retired and current athletes, acknowledging that these initiatives are making a difference
