In a bid to attract and retain top talent, Singapore plans to implement salary increases for 37,000 public healthcare workers in 2025, affecting allied health professionals (AHPs), pharmacists, and administrative, ancillary, and support staff. This move comes amid increasing demand for healthcare services and manpower due to an aging population. Nurses will also see salary adjustments, building upon the existing Angel scheme, a long-term retention initiative for nurses.
Singapore is set to increase salaries for 37,000 public healthcare workers in 2025, aiming to attract and retain talent in key roles. Minister for Health Ong Ye Kung announced the move on Wednesday, the first day of Chinese New Year, stating that allied health professionals (AHPs), pharmacists, and administrative, ancillary, and support staff will see salary increases from mid-2025.
Details are still being finalized, with the Ministry of Health (MOH) engaging in discussions with other ministries and unions. Ong emphasized that this salary increase is long overdue, noting similar adjustments made for other public healthcare professionals. He highlighted the competitive landscape, stating that these professionals have alternative options, such as working overseas or in the private sector. The minister stressed the need to offer competitive salaries to attract and retain top talent in the public healthcare sector.The MOH announced that alongside the salary adjustments for AHPs, pharmacists, and administrative staff, there will be upward adjustments to monthly base salaries for 26,000 public healthcare nurses. These adjustments will build upon the Award for Nurses' Grace, Excellence, and Loyalty (Angel) scheme, introduced in 2024, which provides long-term retention incentives for nurses in the public healthcare system. The Angel scheme saw approximately 29,000 nurses receive up to $100,000 in payouts over a 20-year period. Mr. Ong acknowledged that the increasing demand for healthcare services and manpower, driven by an aging population, necessitates continuous efforts to attract and retain qualified personnel. Beyond salary adjustments, the MOH intends to review manpower development initiatives and strengthen the healthcare workforce. This includes supporting mid-career entrants, improving job opportunities through job redesign and career development, and fostering a safe and conducive work environment through its zero-tolerance policy against abuse and harassment. During his visit to the Singapore General Hospital and Outram Community Hospital, Mr. Ong interacted with patients and staff, distributed oranges, and participated in a lohei session with hospital staff at SingHealth Tower, marking the traditional Chinese New Year celebration
