A 78-year-old woman in Singapore was hospitalized after a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment, prompting her family to demand answers from the clinic. The woman, Liu, is unable to get out of bed after experiencing gastrointestinal bleeding.
An elderly woman in Singapore was hospitalised in the intensive care unit after receiving a traditional Chinese medicine ( TCM ) treatment three days prior. The 78-year-old woman, Liu, is now unable to get out of bed on her own after falling ill. Her family is demanding answers from the clinic involved, urging them to disclose the contents of the medicinal paste used during the treatment, which was part of a $17,000 package.
Liu's son, Cai, discovered his mother unconscious on November 10th and immediately took her to the hospital. Doctors diagnosed her with gastrointestinal bleeding and she underwent emergency surgery. She remained in the intensive care unit for three days and was hospitalised for over a month. The family claims to have never known about Liu's visits to the TCM clinic until finding receipts for over $17,000. Liu reportedly first visited a massage parlour in September and was recommended to the TCM clinic. During her third visit, she complained of feeling unwell and more tired after the treatments. The clinic staff then applied another medicinal paste during a back and leg massage. Cai said his mother described it as odourless and not sticky, and reported feeling more awake after its application. A doctor at the hospital informed Liu's children that if the medicinal paste contained steroids, it could increase gastric acid levels, potentially leading to gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, and other symptoms. Liu's daughter stated that the TCM clinic refused to disclose the prescription details, citing confidentiality concerns. Liu's family filed a police report, a complaint with the Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners Board, and another with the Consumers Association of Singapore
