A recent Facebook post sparked a debate about the design of Singapore's new electric buses, with concerns raised about their suitability for elderly passengers.

A Singaporean man recently voiced his concerns on social media regarding the design of the new three-door electric buses. In a Facebook post on January 17th, shared on the COMPLAINT SINGAPORE page, the man described his experience boarding one of these buses for the first time. He expressed discomfort with the bus layout, particularly the high curb, which he felt posed challenges for elderly passengers.

He questioned if the design was intended for a future with increased flooding, given the elevated curb. The post sparked a debate in the comments section, with some users echoing his concerns about the bus's discomfort and questionable design choices. Others defended the Land Transport Authority (LTA), suggesting that there were likely valid reasons behind the bus's features. The LTA had announced in November 2023 its commitment to electrifying Singapore's public bus fleet. The plan included the deployment of 240 electric three-door single-deck buses and 120 electric three-door double-deck buses, gradually replacing diesel buses reaching the end of their lifespan. In October 2024, the LTA announced the addition of 10 more electric buses, bringing the total number to 70. This marked a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and modernizing Singapore's public transport system. The new buses are equipped with advanced safety and accessibility features, including high-definition cameras and digital displays replacing traditional rear-view mirrors. The LTA aims to electrify half of its bus fleet by 2030 and achieve a fully electric fleet by 2040.
