Lim Jian Qiang, a 34-year-old Singaporean man, pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property and was sentenced to four weeks in jail. Lim fell victim to promises of marriage from an online persona named 'Latifa' and unwittingly participated in a money laundering operation.

A Singapore an man, Lim Jian Qiang, has been sentenced to four weeks in jail for receiving stolen money and transferring it on behalf of a woman he met online. Lim, 34, befriended an online persona named “Latifa” in 2018 and began communicating with her. In 2020, Latifa asked Lim to receive and transfer money into his bank account. Lim agreed, despite having suspicions that Latifa might be involved in criminal activity.

He admitted that he knew the source of the funds was questionable and even told police that he was worried Latifa might be engaged in illegal activities. However, he continued to help her, hoping she would come to Singapore and marry him. The police investigated Lim in 2020 after receiving reports that complainants had been victims of tenancy-related scams and that the money Lim was receiving was related to these scams. Despite police warnings against involving himself further, Lim continued to receive and transfer money for Latifa until February 2021, totaling S$177,270.86. Lim's actions came to light when an accountant from Singapore company Turbo Solutions lodged a police report about an email impersonation scam involving their client, Swan Shipping. Swan Shipping inadvertently transferred S$9,075 to Lim's account following fraudulent instructions. Though Lim suspected the funds were stolen, he transferred them as instructed by Latifa. After the police confiscated the remaining balance in Lim's account, he was charged and convicted. Lim has yet to make any restitution, and Latifa's whereabouts remain unknown
